My name:
First of all, I would like to tell you something about my name. Did you know I actually have two official names? You are undoubtedly aware of
Bilbao, my official and international name.
I also go by my Basque name
Bilbo, which is famous and well-known. Especially if you are a fan of the works of J. R. R. Tolkien, like ‘The Hobbit’, you might have recognised my name straight away, since the main character of the Hobbit is called Bilbo.
My favourite interests and hobbies:
I love soccer and I am a big fan of ‘los Leones’ of ‘
Athletic Club de Bilbao’, a team that only contains Basque players and they are made up of Basque teams. I have a port, which is one of the five most important in Spain, and one shouldn’t forget the
Nervión River, because along the river you can go on boat excursions or kayaking.
You can also admire famous art in the
Guggenheim Museum: the museum of
fine art. Now, I shouldn’t be forgetting about the history of my country in the
Basque museum so let’s move on.
My history:
I have existed since the 2nd century B.C. but
I was founded in 1300 by Diego López de Haro V. During the Spanish civil war, all my bridges were destroyed by the nationalist movement and in the 1960’s the terrorist organisation ETA committed violent actions in my streets.
Today:
Nowadays, I aim to protect the good reputation I have among tourists and to develop more ecological projects in the future. In 2018, I won the UNESCO ‘
Best European City’ award.
I really love my ‘
Aste Nagusia’ party, which takes place during nine days each year in August. During this event, hundreds of exchange students come together. In the upcoming articles, I will inform you all about my festivals and traditions.
