The beer culture is widespread throughout Spain. From classic and industrial brands produced in Valencia like Turia, to the myriad of artisan brands that have recently emerged. In recent years there has been an increase in the consumption of craft breweries.

Fermented grains, hops and water are basic ingredients and everything that comes after is what determines the distinct flavour of each brand. Some beers have a higher alcohol percentage, others have a more intense flavour or an exotic flavour.

 

Each company has its nuances, but there are some varieties that are already widespread and that almost all breweries produce. An example being “Clara”.

Clara beer is a fresh and light beer, typical for the hottest months of the year. Originated from Germany, it is made of beer and lemon juice, but be careful, depending on where you are, you must clarify some details before ordering it. In Madrid, you must point out to the waiter that you want the drink with lemon juice, because if you just ask for a Clara, they would serve you a mixture of beer and soda. Clara has different names depending on the place you are ordering it from,  in Mallorca you ask for Shandy, or Champú in Valencia.

Apart from the many factories in Valencia, there are plenty of places where you can try a wide variety of beers. Here are some of the most popular beers among beer lovers: ‘The Market’ specializes in craft beers such as Tyris, is located in the heart of the neighbourhood of El Carmen; ‘Comic Brewery’ in Plaza Honduras is one of the best places if you are a student due to the great atmosphere and variety of beers; ‘Birra & Blues’, in the centre, has ten taps serving self-made beer; and of course, the beers on the markets, specifically the ‘Colón Market’, which has a brewery in its basement where you can taste and buy imported craft beers.

As you can see, there is a huge variety of beer to discover, so it is a good idea to go out with friends and enjoy some good beers.
