Within Cuenca is a small place that makes you think of old tales and fantasy stories: the enchanted city. This magical place is rich in history and located 30 km from Cuenca. It is part of the Serranía de Cuenca National Park. A spectacular setting in which you can see the geological process of karst and the rock formations it has left behind.

The origin of this unusual place dates back 90 million years ago. During that time the entire area that’s part of the enchanted city, was part of the seabed of the Thetis sea, characterised by its calm waters. It wasn’t until the end of the Cretaceous period that the sea disappeared along with its seabed, exposing the bottom surface. As a result of erosion, wind and ice, this area has turned into a spectacle for the eyes of visitors

In order to enjoy Cuenca’s well-kept secret, a short tour around the mountain is necessary. The tour has an approximate length of 3 kilometers and its path is well marked so you should not be afraid of getting lost in the mountains. Along the path you will be able to enjoy the different rock formations, which remind you of different objects and living things such as turtles, seals or even dogs.

The path through the enchanted city does not require much physical effort, but it is always advisable to check the height difference and the type of route you’re going to take, in order to avoid unwanted injuries. However, all tours available should be suitable for all audiences.

It is such a privileged natural setting, you can actually appreciate and learn how natural erosion affects the earth’s surface.
