Toledo, also known as “
The Imperial City”, was one of the main headquarters of
Carlos the first. The city is also famous for its diverse culture that has been there for many years, even centuries, cultures such as
Muslim, Jewish and Christian. For this reason the city was given the name “
City of the three cultures”. Toledo has it all:
history, architecture, good cuisine and culture.
Surrounded by the
Tajo river, the city is located on top of a rocky promontory.
Toledo was declared as
World Heritage by
UNESCO in 1986. Thanks to the coexistence of the
Muslim, Hebrew and Christian culture, Toledo has become an
open-air museum because its buildings radiate history from all corners. They have an exceptional preservation of the architectural heritage so you can appreciate all its details.
One of the most important untouched heritages that this city has, is
its cuisine, in which
meat has an important presence. A typical dish that you will find in this area is
the caramusa, a dish consisting of stewed meat with tomato and a slightly spicy sauce, pickled rabbit and garlic soup. Regarding desserts,
marzipan from Toledo is one of the best. Bear in mind that Toledo is also a
wine production area, so the local wine must be tasted if you are visiting, no exceptions!
The most symbolic places of this city are
its mosques, synagogues, palaces and manors. However, the most representative are t
he Puerta de Bisagra, the Church of Santo Tomé, the Plaza Zocover, the Alcázar, the Monasterio de San Juan de los Reyes and the Hospital de Santa Cruz. Since the entire city itself is worthy of being admired, you should join this excursion.
